Maintenance & Repair

Ironwork & Metal Work

Window grilles, railings, gates and welded repairs.

When do you need this?

In metal work, how long a job lasts depends as much on rust preparation and the way it is fixed to the wall as on the weld itself. We assess on site whether an existing piece can be repaired or needs renewing, choose anchor points to suit the wall type, and define rust removal, primer and paint coats as separate items in the scope. With window grilles we weigh protection against break-ins together with the means of escape in an emergency.

  • A railing that wobbles because its wall fixing has weakened
  • Paint lifting and sections thinning because of rust
  • A garden or entrance gate that rubs or will not latch
  • A broken hinge or cracked weld on a metal door
  • A window grille that blocks the way out in an emergency

THE PROCESS

How the work runs

  1. Share photos of the metalwork, its fixing points and the surroundings

  2. On-site measurement and a check of rust, wall type and escape routes

  3. Written scope for sections, anchoring method, surface protection and welding safety measures

  4. Delivery after approval, with surroundings shielded from sparks and the area ventilated

  5. Handover after checks on rigidity, opening and closing, and the paint finish

What should I consider before fitting window grilles?

A grille should protect against break-ins without closing off the only way out in an emergency such as a fire. Particularly in bedrooms we consider designs with a lockable section that opens from inside, and we point out that work on an apartment building facade may need building management approval.

Can a rusty railing be saved with paint?

Yes, if the rust is on the surface: it is removed mechanically, then an anti-corrosion primer and paint are applied. Where rust has thinned or holed a section, paint alone is not enough and that part is cut out and renewed by welding. We establish which applies at survey.

Is it safe to weld on site inside a flat?

Yes, with the right precautions. Before welding we move flammable materials away, cover floors, glass and furniture against sparks, and make sure the space is ventilated. Where those precautions cannot be put in place, we recommend removing the piece and repairing it in a workshop.
